Tracing Memories

Tracing Memories
2018
Workshop
The Tracing Memories Workshop came to life through a research project into isolated communities, and how the direction of technological developments can remove us from physical interactions with each other. Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation, and it can have a serious effect on physical, and mental health. According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. 3.6 million people aged 65 and over agree that the television is their main form of company.
During our research we found that story telling of any form is proven to cause the release of Oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone and neuropeptide, which plays a significant role in social bonding, and promotes the feeling of togetherness, and therefore reduces sensations of loneliness. This workshop ran across one afternoon for a two-hour period, where individuals would share stories of their choice, or simply listen. We thank each of the participants who participated and the Bethnal Green church for allowing us their space to run the workshop.
This project was made in collaboration with Charlotte Bolster and Leo Garber.
