Vertical is a speculative archaeological piece made in response to the regeneration programme in Elephant and Castle. More than £3bn has been invested in the area’s redevelopment, which has faced multiple protests over issues such as the lack of affordable social housing. The project uses ethnographic methods to give voice to individuals born, raised, and working around the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.
It reflects on the verticality of architectural change and the collective memories rooted in this site. Vertical takes the form of a film and sculptures that capture and preserve textures of buildings that once surrounded the shopping centre before its demolition.
This work was made in collaboration with Abdullah Habib and Ewa Wnr.
